Mary Ann Calnan, Esq.

Attorney Calnan is a founding partner of Calnan, Freeley & Pellegrini.  She is a graduate of Boston College and Suffolk University Law School in Boston.  While in law school she worked as a Conciliator at the Department of Industrial Accidents in Boston.

Following graduation Attorney Calnan joined the law firm of Driscoll, Gillespie & Stanton and later the law firms of Stanton & Lang and Mullen & McGourty, firms specializing in general litigation.  Attorney Calnan concentrates her practice in the workers’ compensation field.  Attorney Calnan has worked as an insurance defense attorney for over  25 years.  She has represented virtually every major insurance company as special or panel counsel.  In addition, Attorney Calnan has represented various third party administrators, self-insured and several municipalities.  She has represented several employers in Section 28 cases.

Attorney Calnan presently represents several national companies as appointed counsel for various insurance companies and self-insureds.  She has attended and participated in numerous national litigation conferences for a variety of clients.  She has provided numerous legal seminars and training to most of her clients.

She is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Worker’s Compensation Sub-Committee.  Attorney Calnan is also a member of the Board of Trustees of her high school alma mater, St. Mary’s High, Lynn and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2022.

Attorney Calnan was awarded the James Garretson Advocacy Award by the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys in 2018.  In March 2024, Attorney Calnan was inducted into the College of Worker’s Compensation Lawyers, an organization that honors Workers’ Compensation Plaintiff Attorneys, Defense Attorneys, Professors and Judges nationwide. Fellows are recognized as distinguished members of the Workers’ Compensation legal community.

Ann Marie Freeley, Esq.

Ann Marie Freeley is a founding partner of Calnan, Freeley & Pellegrini.   She is a graduate of Tufts University (Cum Laude, B.S. in Political Science) and Boston University School of Law.

Attorney Freeley has over 30 years of experience in litigating workers compensation claims at the Department of Industrial Accidents, originally on the employee side and for the past fifteen years on the defense side as an attorney at Mullen and McGourty.

Attorney Freeley is a frequent lecturer in workers compensation matters, through MATA and the Massachusetts Bar Association.  She is a frequent presenter in workers’ compensation nuts and bolts seminars, more advanced training sessions and strategy development workshops for insurers, self-insurers and employers.  She is a strong advocate of the team approach to handling workers’ compensation claims, coordinating efforts with Human Resource Officers, Occupational Medicine Specialists, Claims Staff, Brokers and Risk Managers to achieve best results.

Shenan Pellegrini, Esq.

Attorney Pellegrini is a founding partner of Calnan, Freeley & Pellegrini.  She is a graduate of Boston College (B.S. Cum Laude 1996) and Suffolk University Law School (J.D. Cum Laude 1999).

Attorney Pellegrini is a former Partner with the law firm of Mullen & McGourty specializing in workers’ compensation defense litigation.  She has over 18 years’ experience in defending and litigating on behalf of employers, self-insurers, TPA’s and insurance carriers.

Attorney Pellegrini has been a frequent lecturer for workers’ compensation continuing legal education, insurance industry groups and employers.  She is an adjunct professor at Suffolk University Law School teaching Workers’ Compensation law.  She is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Sub-Committee (now a full section) and serves on its’ Education Sub-Committee.  She is also a member of the American Bar Association.  Attorney Pellegrini is a contributing author for the Lexis Nexis Practice Guide for Massachusetts Workers’ Compensation 2014 Edition and was the distinguished faculty for the 36th and 37th Annual Seak, Inc. National Workers’ Compensation and Occupational Medicine Conference presenting a workshop on managing and defending workers’ compensation claims.
